Why Satellite TV?
Technology has enabled companies like DirecTV
and Dish
Network to bring television to everyone in the US.
Satellite tv doesn't have the limitations of typical cable television
installations. Because the signal is broadcast from satellites, the
consumer in rural and remote locations can receive high quality
television programming regardless of cable company availability in the
area, or paying huge fees to have their location wired into existing
services.
With
fees typically lower than cable, satellite tv makes sense for existing
cable customers as well.
With free installation and equipment, satellite television is
definitely worth a look!
Benefits
A few of the benefits of satellite tv are:
- All digital signal means superior video and audio quality
- Usually less expensive than cable TV
- Not limitted to cable company service area
- Access to international programming
- Works on any television
- High definition programming available (HDTV)
- Digital Video Recording (DVR)
- Parental controls
Limitations
The satellite dish requires a clear line of
sight to the satellite. This means that in some instances the mounting
location of the dish may be limited. For example, you may want your
dish behind the house where it is less visible, but depending on the
location this may not be possible if your house or a tree is blocking
the view of the satellite from the dish. Most installation companies
will perfrorm a site survey when they arrive for the installation. This
will take into account the customer's preferred mounting location and
the site specific limitations.
Weather can also be a problem, however, if there is a clear line of
sight and the satellite dish is properly mounted and peaked outages are
rare and only occur during the worst weather conditions.
Satellite TV Providers
The two
main satellite television providers in the US are DirecTV
and Dish
Network. Both offer similar programming packages and
promotions. Be sure to check out each in detail so that you know
exactly what you're getting and how much it's going to cost. If you're
not sure just what programming you want, you can start with the least
expensive package and upgrade later. Changing programming usually just
takes a phone call. No service appointment is needed.
